Paddy Burns Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Fresh off defeating No. 7/8 Pitt at Alumni Stadium on Saturday evening in a double-overtime thriller, sophomore left back Paddy Burns has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The Irish have now won back-to-back defensive weekly honors from the ACC after Philip Quinton earned the accolade last week.

Burns was key on the Notre Dame back line in a 1-0 double-overtime win over No. 7 Pitt on Saturday, which lifted the Fighting Irish to the top of the ACC table. The Irish limited the potent Pitt offense to five shots in more than 105 minutes of play, including just one on target.

Burns and the Irish defense became the first team to record a clean sheet against the Panthers during the 2021 season. Notre Dame has now recorded three straight clean sheets, including in back-to-back wins at Clemson and against Pitt, while riding a five-game win streak.

The Irish return to action at Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, as they welcome UIC for a non-conference matchup.
