John Owens is the starting tight end this year for the Irish. A senior, Owens was a defensive lineman until last years Tostitos Fiesta Bowl game appearance by the Irish, where he saw some time at tight end.

The following is an interview with Owens:

Q: Is there any pressure coming into the first game against Nebraska, filling the shoes of Dan O’Leary and Jabari Holloway?

A: I don’t think there is any real pressure right now. The main pressure I feel is the pressure I put on myself. I am just trying to step in and contribute like Jabari and Dan had in previous years.

Q: Do you still talk to Dan or Jabari?

A: I haven’t talked to Dan, but I have talked to Jabari quite often. I am supposed to call him tonight, or tomorrow. He is doing all right.

Q: How does the tight end corp look this year?

A: All of us are pretty productive. We try to help each other along, though there is a lot of competition. We are just trying to help out each other out so we can be the best that we can be at our position, and to help the team.

Q: Will the tight ends become more important this year, possibly as a receiving option?

A: I always thought the tight end was important. We have to do pretty much a little of everything, pass, run, block, run routes. As far as receiving, there are a few more plays. I am just trying to take advantage of it, to give the Coach more confidence in us.
