On The Clock With Lauren Fowlkes

Sept. 18, 2009

Junior Lauren Fowlkes currently is a mainstay on the Notre Dame women’s soccer team, having played virtually every position on the field, except goalkeeper, during her college career. In addition to helping the Fighting Irish make consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances in 2007 and 2008, the Lee’s Summit, Mo., native also has made her mark on the international stage, earning a gold medal last December as a member of the United States Under-20 Women’s World Cup Team that won the title in Chile on the same day Notre Dame faced North Carolina for the ’08 national championship. Fowlkes sat down with UND.com earlier this week to tell us a little more about herself.

What is your favorite class that you’ve taken at Notre Dame so far and why?
General Biology lab, because we dissected a fetal pig named Blue and did some other cool experiments.

If you could trade places with any other person at Notre Dame, who would it be and why?
I would trade places with Father Hesburgh. I think it would be fascinating to have his wisdom and to know what life is like for him.

What is the best place you’ve been able to play soccer at during your college career?
Alumni Stadium. There is no comparison.

If you didn’t play soccer, what other sport would you love to play and why?
That’s a tough one but I think I would play basketball. I played it when I was younger, and it was always a lot of fun.

What’s the best book you’ve read recently?
This summer I was into the Twilight series, so I would have to say that.

What is your favorite memory with the soccer team?
Beating North Carolina on their home field (1-0 in the regular season last year) and taking their No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

North or South Dining Hall?
South.

Dogs or cats?
Dogs

How do you manage to balance schoolwork and soccer?
It can be tough and a little stressful at times, but it’s something I have done my whole life and the schoolwork somehow seems to always get done. For me, the key is organizing and managing what I need to get done so that due dates and tests don’t sneak up on me.

What is currently playing on your iPod?
Dave Matthews Band and the Fray

What is the best game for fighting off boredom on road trips?
I believe some of my teammates were playing MASH on the plane last weekend.

Would you rather be able to fly or have the power of invisibility?
The power to fly.

If you had two weeks and unlimited funds to travel to any country in the world, where would you go and what would you do?
Australia. I would enjoy time on the beach in the sun and go scuba diving.

What are your goals for this soccer season?
To win a national championship and make a significant impact on the team.

What is the most embarrassing thing to happen to you at Notre Dame?
Let’s just say wearing a sun dress and using a backpack does not work out. The dress will tend to ride up under the backpack.

Do you prefer to study in CoMo (Coleman-Morris), the library, or somewhere else?
CoMo

What’s your favorite late night snack?
I am a Reckers girl. Try the pizza toscana. Amazing!!

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you choose and why?
I would be a dolphin. Swimming around the ocean all day would be a blast!

What’s it like to walk out onto the field with your team during a football game?
It’s always a thrill and it makes me kind of nervous, because you never know what response you will get from the crowd.

What is your favorite movie and how many times have you seen it?
Tough question. It depends on my mood, but “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” is a great one. I have probably seen that 10-15 times.

Who is the funniest person you know?
Turtle … aka Pat Coughlin

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Katherine Heigl
