O'Brien Takes National Title in Women's Pentathlon

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish started out on strong as the the first national title was handed out to Jadin O’Brien in the women’s pentathlon.

O’Brien finished the day with 4512 points and set two event personal bests, and recorded a personal best for the pentathlon overall. Her total makes her the number ten collegian of all-time in the pentathlon. 

She started out taking third in the 60 meter hurdles and registering 1057 points which placed her in second place overall. O’Brien then hit a personal best on the high jump when she cleared 1.72m. She remained in the top three until her presence was made known by the third event, the shot put, where she posted a personal best with a throw of 13.85m. 

There were two events left for O’Brien to secure the national title. In the long jump she hit her mark of 6.09m to take sixth place and tallying 3597 points. She entered into the 800 meter needing to run at least a 2:14.31 to get 930 more points to push her to first place. O’Brien ran for a 2:13.40 to secure the national title and finish with 4512 points.

The Irish were also represented in the women’s distance medley relay with a team of Katie Thronson, Eve Balseiro, Katie Ryan and Olivia Markezich. The team took third place and secured All-American honors with a time of 10:59.46.

Carter Solomon ran in the men’s 5000 meter race where he finished with a time of 14:37.57.

The Irish return to competition tomorrow when Olivia Markezich and Michael Shoaf take the stage in the 3000 meter and the shot put. The women’s 3000 meter is slated for a 7:00 pm (EST) start while the shot put is slated for a 9:00 pm (EST) start. Live results are available as well as broadcast coverage on ESPN+.
