Nuguse And Carlson Pick Up USTFCCCA Yearly Honors

NEW ORLEANS – Notre Dame men’s track star Yared Nuguse and assistant coach Sean Carlson each received regionals honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday.

Nuguse was named the Great Lakes Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year and Carlson received Great Lakes Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

Nuguse has dominated headlines across the country for his performances in the 1,500m. The defending NCAA champion set the NCAA record in the event at the ACC Championships with a solo run of 3:34.68 to not only break the record but also hit the Olympic qualifying standard for the event.

The senior currently holds the fifth fastest time by an American in the event in 2021. Nuguse’s impressive time also set the ACC record, ACC Championship meet record and Notre Dame record. The Louisville product went on to win the ACC title in the 1,500m and enters the NCAA Championships with the top time in the country.

Carlson has methodically built the Notre Dame men’s distance program into one of the top units in the country. This season the men’s distance runners scored in every distance event at ACC Outdoor Championships totaling 40 points and 14 student-athletes qualified to the NCAA East Regional competing in every distance event. A total of three Irish men’s distance runners qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
