EAST MEADOW, N.Y.- The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team continued its dominating ways on the third and final day of the 2007 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. The Irish ultimately took the title by 228 points over second-place Rutgers. Notre Dame has now won a record-setting 11 consecutive BIG EAST titles.

Sophomores Casey Wagner (Glenshaw, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Claire Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) started the day with a fourth (16:42.74) and a sixth (16:49.64) place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Freshman Maggie Behrens (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the 200-yard backstroke group with a season-best fifth place finish (2:02.86). Others to score in the event for the Irish included Ann Barton (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) (2:03.39), Ellen Johnson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) ((2:05.17) and Stacey Nedrud (Melbourne, Fla./Cocoa Beach) (2:06.18).

Senior Rebecca Grove (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 50.56. Christa Riggins (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) finished fifth in the event for Notre Dame (50.77).

Julia Quinn (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) swam a season-best time of 2:14.41 to win the 200-yard breaststroke for the second consecutive season.

Senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, while teammate Megan Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) finished fifth in the same event.

The 400-yard free relay team of Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Ma./Glendale), Carroll, Riggins, and Grove places third in the same event.

Junior Tara Hyer (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holly Names) led the Irish divers with the 247.80 points to finish third in the three-meter diving.

Following the completion of the meet, Notre Dame’s women’s team took home a pair of awards. Head Coach Carrie Nixon was named the Women’s BIG EAST Coach of the Year, while Carroll was named Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer. Carroll, during the meet broke the Notre Dame record for career all-BIG East honors (28), as well as an individual (12) and part of a relay team (16).
