Notre Dame Wins Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men and women took first place in the Notre Dame Swimming and Diving Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Irish men won with 1454 points, 214.5 points ahead of second-place Western Kentucky with 1239.5 points. Division III-power Denison was third with 1057 points, followed by Michigan State (865.5) and Toledo (833). For the women, Notre Dame scored 1292.5 points, finishing just ahead of Michigan State (1197), Denison (1176) and Western Kentucky (879).

The Irish men won three events today and placed strong in the other races. Junior Dan Szilier took first place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.35. Fellow classmate Ryan Verlin took the 200 butterfly in a meet-record time of 1:49.98, while sophomore Jonathan Pierce won the 1650 freestyle race in a time of 15:41.92.

In the 100 freestyle, Notre Dame’s Ray Fitzpatrick placed second to Western Kentucky’s Kicker Vencill, who set a meet and pool record in a time of 43.78. Notre Dame also placed second and third in the men’s one-meter diving competition. Senior Herb Huesman continued his comeback from injury by placing second with 468.30 points, while freshman Andy Maggio was third with 460.25. Huesman missed the entire 1998-99 season due to injury.

Senior Alison Newell was the lone women’s event winner for the Irish today. She won the 200 butterfly in 2:01.40, as the men and women swept both 200 races. Yesterday, Newell won the 100 butterfly and swam the butterfly leg of the winning 200 medley relay team.

In diving, Notre Dame placed third, fourth and fifth in the women’s three-meter event. Senior Gina Ketelhohn was third with 381.60 points, while sophomore Heather Mattingly was fourth at 380.90 and junior Karli Richards was fifth with 351.10 points.
