PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island- The Notre Dame volleyball team (16-11, 10-4 BIG EAST) have earned the fifth seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Volleyball Championship and will take on the fourth seed and host school Cincinnati (21-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) on Friday, Nov. 12 at the Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati at 6 p.m. the league office announced this evening, Nov. 12.

The Irish ended the 2006 BIG EAST regular season in a four-way tie for third place. By virtue of the BIG EAST tiebreaker system, Pittsburgh (22-8, 10-4 BIG EAST) earned the third seed, Cincinnati will be the fourth seed and Marquette (16-11, 10-4 BIG EAST) will enter the tournament as the sixth seed.

The winner of the BIG EAST Championship will receive the conferences automatic bid into the 64-team 2006 NCAA Division I Championships.

The Irish are the reigning BIG EAST Tournament champions after having defeating Villanova, Cincinnati and Louisville last season. Notre Dame has won nine BIG EAST Championship titles since joining the league in 1995 and have an all-time mark of 22-2 (.917) in BIG EAST Championship action.

The first day of the single elimination tournament goes as follows:

No. 1 seed St. John’s (29-1, 14-0 BIG EAST) vs. No. 8 seed South Florida (12-15, 7-7 BIG EAST): 3:30 p.m.

No. 2 seed Louisville (20-6, 13-1 BIG EAST) vs. No. 7 seed Connecticut (19-10, 8-6 BIG EAST): 12:30 p.m.

No. 3 seed Pittsburgh (22-8, 10-4 BIG EAST) vs. No. 6 seed Marquette (16-11, 10-4 BIG EAST): 10 a.m.

No. 4 seed Cincinnati (21-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) vs. No. 5 seed Notre Dame (16-11, 10-4 BIG EAST): 6 p.m.
