Saturday’s Notre Dame-Virginia Tech baseball game at English Field has been called off after nearly a two-hour rain delay. Losses by Boston College and Pittsburgh handed the final BIG EAST Tournament spot to the Hokies, who will open the postseason in Thursday’s early game (4:00 p.m.) versus regular-season champion Rutgers.

Notre Dame finishes third in the final BIG EAST standings, behind Rutgers and West Virginia (which ralled from a 5-2 deficit to knock off BC, 6-5, with two runs in the ninth). The Irish and Mountaineers will face off in a first-round meeting at the BIG EAST Tournament, in Thursday’s second game (7:00 p.m., at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J.).
