Debbie Brown, who was a two-time All-American as an outside hitter for USC, will not take on her former school this weekend, but will still lead her Irish into two tough tests in the Gamecock Invitational.

Notre Dame-USC Match Cancelled, As Trojans Bypass Gamecock Invitational

Sept. 17, 2004

The University of Southern California announced Thursday that its second-ranked women’s volleyball team would not participate in this weekend’s Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C., citing “safety issues and travel difficulties as a result of the severe weather conditions in the Southeast caused by Hurricane Ivan and the upcoming Hurricane Jeanne.” As a result, Notre Dame’s match against the Women of Troy, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, will not be played.

The Irish will still play two matches in the Gamecock Invitational, taking on Michigan State at 4 p.m. (EDT) Friday in the Volleyball Competition Facility on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Notre Dame will then have a day off before playing the tournament host, at 2 p.m. on Sunday. That match will be televised by College Sports Television (CSTV) as part of its “Sunday Night Spikes” match-of-the-week series. It will be aired at 6 p.m. (EDT), 5 p.m. in South Bend, on Sunday.

Live scoring of all matches in the Gamecock Invitational will be available via the official website of South Carolina athletics, www.uscsports.com. Fans also will be able to access live audio of both contests, provided by www.msuspartans.com and www.uscsports.com, respectively.

As of now, there are no plans for any additional matches to be added to Notre Dame’s schedule.
