Notre Dame Track And Field Teams Record First-Place Finishes

April 3, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field squads both finished first at their only home outdoor meet of the season Saturday at Monogram Track. The Irish women placed first with a team score of 237.5, while the men earned 227.5 points at the four-team meet which included squads from Butler University, Miami (OH) University and Western Michigan University.

The Notre Dame women were paced by freshmen multi-event performers Jamie Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) and Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.). King was the most decorated female competitor of the meet, winning the long jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash and was a member of the first place and school record-setting 4×100-meter relay, which clocked a time of 46.32 to also set a track record. Volkmer, meanwhile, continued her assault on the record books with school and track records in both the pole vault (11-5) and the triple jump (39-10 3/4) en route to first-place finishes in both events.

Irish sophomore sprinter Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) set a track record in the 400 meters (54.16) and then came back later in the meet to win the 200 meters after running the anchor leg on the winning 4×100-meter relay. Sophomore Dore DeBartolo (Aurora, Ill.) gave the Irish valuable first-place points in the women’s shot put and hammer throw. Single event winners included senior Jennifer Engelhardt (high jump) and junior Leanne Brady (800 meters), who each set track records, freshman Andre Duplechain (Port Barre, La.), who posted a school-record mark (118-7) in the javelin, senior Patty Rice (1,500 meters), senior Nicole LaSelle (3,000 meters), freshman Kymia Love (4×100-meter relay) and junior Carri Lenz (4×100-meter relay).

On the men’s side, Notre Dame had 10 different people win at least one event. Senior Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the charge with individual event wins in the 100 and 200 meters and was a member of the school and track record-setting 4×100-meter relay, which posted a time of 40.22. Senior Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.), the anchor on the 4×100-meter relay, finished first in the long jump and placed second to Cochran in the 200 meters. Sophomore Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.), senior Matt Thompson (Granite Bay, Calif.), freshman Nathan Cahill (East Lansing, Mich.), junior Matt O’Brien (Bryceville, Fla.), senior Tim Kober (Gillette, N.J.), junior Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.), junior Travis Davey (St. James, N.Y.) and freshman Tom Gilbert (Rock Falls, Ill.) all won events for the Irish men.
