Notre Dame To Host 'Moonlight Madness'

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball teams will tipoff their 2001-02 campaigns on Fri., Oct 12 at the Joyce Center with “Moonlight Madness.” as a prelude to the official start of practice on Sat., Oct. 13.

The event is free and open to the general public. The gates of the Joyce Center will open at 10:30 p.m with each fan in attendance receiving a Hershey “Slam Dunk” candy bar upon entering the event.

The festivities begin with introductions of both the men’s and women’s teams at 11:00 p.m., followed by a series of contests from 11:20-11:50 p.m. in which contestants will have the opportunity to win airline tickets, adidas apparel and other items. In addition, the nationally famous Zooperstars will perform throughout the evening.

Irish head men’s basketball coach Mike Brey and women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw will address the crowd at 11:50. At midnight, both teams will make their entrances onto the Joyce Center floor for a series of scrimmages for 40 minutes.

The evening is expected to conclude at 1:00 p.m. following a slam dunk contest by the men’s squad at 12:45 a.m. which will be judged by the women’s team.

The ticket office located at the entrance to the Joyce Center at Gate 10 will be open to sell tickets for both men’s and women’s games during the upcoming season.

10:30 p.m. – Doors Open to the Public (Admission is free)

  • Every fan will receive a Hershey “Slam Dunk” candy bar

11:00 p.m. – Introduction of both the men’s and women’s teams

  • Special introductions with a lightshow and music

11:20-11:50 p.m. – Contests and Zooperstars

  • Contests between Irish players and fans
  • Fans can win airline tickets, adidas apparel and an assortment of other items

11:50-12:00 a.m. – Mike Brey and Muffet McGraw address the crowd

12:00-12:40 a.m. – Scrimmages by both teams

12:45-1:00 a.m. – Men’s slam dunk contest

  • Will be judged by the women’s team

1:00 a.m. – “Moonlight Madness” concludes
