NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 2009 National Soccer Coaching Seminar will be held March 13th and 14th on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. This year’s guest clinician is John Ireland, the former Sports Conditioning and Performance Specialist for Derby County FC, L.A. Galaxy and Colorado Rapids.
As always, Notre Dame men’s head coach Bobby Clark and women’s head coach Randy Waldrum along with some of their players will round out this year’s clinicians.
Ireland worked with David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy during the 2008 season. He also has worked with the Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Mammoth (National Lacrosse League) during which time the Mammoth won a world championship. The Derby County Football Club, in the world-renowned English Premier League, also has benefited from Ireland’s expertise. He currently works for the Sports Performance Academy at the Greenwood (Colo.) Athletic & Tennis Club.
As a sports performance coach, Ireland looks after all aspects of the exercise functions performed by the athletes including: cardiovascular training drills, strength resistance, plyometrics, agility, movement mechanics and flexibility exercises. Ireland not only works with young athletes, but also with adults who are striving for better performance.
Ireland received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Physical Education and Sport Science from Loughborough University in England. The school is regarded as one of the premier sport-science teaching institutions in the world.
Clark just finished his eighth year at Notre Dame and guided the Irish to their second straight BIG EAST regular-season title and the program’s eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. He is a two time BIG EAST Coach of the Year and holds a Scottish FA “A” License. Clark led Stanford University to a runner-up finish at the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Not only has Clark coached at a high level, but he has also enjoyed a distinguished professional career in the Scottish League making more than 800 first-team appearances, 696 of which were with the Aberdeen Dons. He was also involved in three of Scotland’s World Cup appearances as a player in 1970, 1974, and 1978.
Fighting Irish women’s soccer head coach Randy Waldrum.
Waldrum completed his 10th year at Notre Dame and led the Fighting Irish to an undefeated record before falling in the national title match. It marked Notre Dame’s third straight trip to the College Cup and the sixth appearance overall during Waldrum’s tenure at the school. He was at the helm during Notre Dame’s run to the 2004 NCAA title and also took the Fighting Irish to the College Cup in 1999 and 2000. Waldrum has been a member of the U. S. National Team coaching staff since 1992, named an NSCAA staff instructor in 2004, and is currently the President of the NSCAA. He is a five time BIG EAST Coach of the Year recipient.
