Notre Dame To Compete In Northwestern Duals This Weekend

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams will be back in action this weekend at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill. The event will take place Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 2 & 3) in the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion.

The top-ranked Fighting Irish women begin competition against UC-San Diego on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (CT). That will be followed with bouts against No. 9 Temple (9:00 a.m.), No. 4 Penn State (10:00 a.m.), No. 2 Ohio State (12:00 p.m.) and Stanford (1:00 p.m.). The Irish will conclude action on Saturday against North Carolina at 2:00 p.m.

Sunday will feature the Notre Dame women starting against Johns Hopkins at 8:00 a.m. (CT). Next will be bouts against Fairleigh Dickinson (9:00 a.m.), Cal State Fullerton (10:00 a.m.) and Cal Tech (11:00 a.m.). The final match will be against Duke at 12:00 p.m.

Leading the charge for the Irish epee unit is junior Kimberlee Montoya with a 24-9 record on the season. In the foil, junior Adrienne Nott, a two-time All-American, carries a 27-4 mark and freshman Hayley Reese is 26-6. Three Irish athletes have eclipsed the 20-win mark in the sabre, freshmen Sarah Borrmann (28-4) and Eileen Hassett (27-6) along with junior Ashley Serrette (21-12).

On the men’s side, No. 3 Notre Dame opens the duals against UC-San Diego at 2:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday. The Irish will then match up against Johns Hopkins (3:00 p.m.) followed by No. 1 Penn State (4:00 p.m.), Cal State Fullerton (5:00 p.m.) and No. 10 Stanford (6:00 p.m.) before the day concludes against Cal Tech at 7:00 p.m.

The Notre Dame men begin competition on Sunday against Duke at 2:00 p.m. A showdown with No. 2 Ohio State follows at 3:00 p.m. before a bout with Lawrence at 4:00 p.m. The Irish will wrap up the duals against North Carolina at 5:00 p.m.

Senior All-American Greg Howard is 24-4 in the epee so far during the 2008 campaign. Fellow epeeist Karol Kostka, a junior and a ’07 All-American, possesses a 22-7 mark. Junior Mark Kubik leads the Irish in the foil with a 19-3 record. Bill Thanhouser, a junior, leads Notre Dame in the sabre once again. The All-American has a 22-9 record this season.

Both the Notre Dame men and women carry 9-2 records into this weekend’s action. The Fighting Irish men went 5-1 at the NYU Duals last weekend, while the women posted a 4-2 mark.
