NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Robert and Marilyn Rolfs Family All-Season Varsity Golf Facility at 10 a.m. (EST/CDT) Saturday on the grounds of the Warren Golf Course. The ceremony will take place at the eventual site of the $2.1 million building, located adjacent to the current Irish golf offices just west of the intersection of Douglas and Ivy Roads on the north edge of the Notre Dame campus.
Upon completion in the fall of 2006, the 10,500-square foot Robert and Marilyn Rolfs Family All-Season Varsity Golf Facility will serve as the new home of the Notre Dame men’s and women’s golf teams, adding a new dimension in the growth of both programs, which have combined to win four BIG EAST Conference titles and make four NCAA regional appearances in the past three seasons alone.
The cornerstone of the Robert and Marilyn Rolfs Family All-Season Varsity Golf Facility will be an expansive indoor chipping and putting area, complete with a sand bunker. In addition, six covered and heated “tee stations” will allow players to use the driving range in all seasons, while coaches will be able to study players’ swing techniques through the use of the latest in video equipment and software analysis. Some of the other highlights of the facility include: separate player locker areas for the Irish men’s and women’s teams with custom-made wood lockers, a spacious player lounge with state-of-the-art amenities such as wide-screen plasma televisions and computers with high-speed Internet access, new offices for each member of the respective coaching staffs, and an on-site equipment room with stations for customized club fitting and repair.
The Notre Dame women’s golf team opened its 2005-06 season last weekend with a nine-shot victory at the Notre Dame Invitational. Meanwhile, the Irish men’s golf team is preparing to tee off its fall schedule Saturday and Sunday in the Gopher Invitational at the Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn.
