Notre Dame Swimming Defeats Metro State, Colorado State

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving squad kicked off its 1999-2000 dual meet schedule with a pair of wins Tuesday over Metro State (246-35) and Colorado State (180-120) in Denver, Colo.

Against Metro State, the Irish finished tallied first-place finishes in all 16 events, while Notre Dame won nine of the 16 events versus Colorado State.

Leading the way for the Irish was four-event winner, junior Carrie Nixon (Ouray, Colo.), who picked up overall wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle, the 200 individual medley and as a member of the winning 200 medley relay team. Sophomore Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, N.J.) also won three event titles in the 100 backstroke and as a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Senior Alison Newell (Parker, Colo.), junior Kristen Van Saun (Lawrence, Kan.) and sophomore Heather Mattingly (Houston, Texas) each won two event title overall.

The Notre Dame divers will head to Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., Friday and Saturday for the Colorado State Invitational.
