NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame stands 12th in the second set of fall sports standings released in the 2000-01 Sears Directors’ Cup all-sports competition. Fall NCAA competition has earned the Irish 134 points based on their ninth-place finish in men’s cross country (59) and their national semifinal appearance in women’s soccer (75). Yet to come are fall points for Notre Dame’s 2000 NCAA involvement in volleyball in which the Irish advanced to the NCAA second round — and the Irish football season (9-2 and ranked 10th in ESPN/USA Today poll heading into Tostitos Fiesta Bowl). North Carolina (290 points) leads the competition thanks to its NCAA championship in women’s soccer and a runnerup finish in field hockey. Second is Stanford, followed by UCLA, Connecticut, Colorado and BYU. The current standings include results from NCAA fall competition in field hockey, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women?s soccer, and water polo. In previous years in which the Sears Directors’ Cup competition has been held, Notre Dame has finished 11th in 1993-94, 30th in 1994-95, 11th in 1995-96, 14th in 1996-97, tied for 31st in 1997-98, 25th in 1998-99 and 21st in 1999-2000.
