Feb. 16, 2007

Box Score

AUBURN, Ala.- After a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the first game against Auburn, it was a bit of a slow start for Notre Dame in the second game of the evening. The Irish ultimately fell to Alabama Birmingham, 8-0, in a run-shortened game on Friday, Feb. 16 at the Tiger Invitational.

The Blazers started the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning. Lindsay Stanley reached first on a bunt single. She then stole second and went to third on a Notre Dame throwing error. After a strikeout, Stanley came around to score the first run on a sacrifice fly. UAB would add a second run as Holly Krzan scored on the Amanda Antonovich single.

UAB tallied single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. The Blazers finished off the Irish with three runs in the sixth inning, with the big hit being a two-run bases loaded double from Krzan.

The Irish were limited to three hits. Stephanie Brown (Chandler, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) and Heather Johnson (Los Alamitos, Calif./Mater Dei) each picked up singles, while Katie Laing (Chandler, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) drilled a double.

Johnson had a steady first day as a collegiate for the Irish, with three hits and an RBI in the games against Auburn and UAB.

The loss went Kenya Fuemmeler (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) who went five innings and surrendered eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

The UAB hurler Jennifer Nelson (2-1) had a great outing going the distance with 14 strikeouts.

Notre Dame continues its play in Tiger Invitational with a pair of games against Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m. and Tulsa at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Irish Notes: Christine Lux (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West) received the first start of her career at first base in the second game … Fellow freshman Ashley Ellis (Pikeville, Tenn./Bledsoe County) got her first career at bat in the second game … Fuemmeler’s five innings pitched were a career-high … the Irish wore their bronze uniforms in both games … due to the Tennessee Tech being played at field without internet capabilities there will be no GameTracker for the game.
