LAS VEGAS — The Notre Dame softball team used a two-out RBI single in the third inning and another strong performance on the mound from junior pitcher Jennifer Sharron to defeat the University of Utah, 2-1, Sunday at the UNLV Softball Classic. The Irish moved to 4-1 on the season with the win, while the Utes, who were previously unbeaten for the tournament, fell to 6-4.

The Irish got on the board early in the top of the first when Rebecca Eimen (Mannford, Okla.), who was pinch running for Sharron, scored on an RBI double by junior Melanie Alkire. The Utes answered in their half of the inning when Molly McLean lead off with a single and then scored on a single by catcher Sunny Smith.

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the top of the third and two outs, Alkire singled, moved to second after freshman Andrea Loman (Riverside, Calif.) walked, and then scored on junior Lizzy Lemire’s single to right field.

Sharron (3-0) got her third straight win of the season allowing just three hits and the one run.

The Irish will be back in action next weekend at the Morning News Invitational at the University of Arkansas.
