Notre Dame Set to Host Wayne State

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame fencing team is set to host their second meet of the season when Wayne State comes to the Castellan Family Fencing Center on Saturday. The Irish were also set to face Lawrence this weekend but they will not be traveling to Notre Dame on Saturday. Both the men and women’s teams look to stay undefeated this season as they have their final tune-up prior to the NCAA Championships on March 25-28.

Notre Dame Invitational

The Irish will fence against Wayne State for the first time this season when the Warriors come to campus this weekend.

Last time out for the Irish, the men and women finished 4-0 at the annual DeCicco Duals on March 6. The men defeated Lawrence twice and Ohio State twice. The women also defeated Ohio State twice and Northwestern twice.

Epeeist Kaylin Hsieh led the women at DeCicco with a team-high 12 wins and finished the day undefeated. Amita Berthier (9-0) and Solène Watson (6-0) joined Hsieh with perfect records for the meet. Freshman Jack Woods led the men with a team-high 10 wins and finished the day 10-1. Ariel Simmons (6-0), Philip Dority (6-0) and Hans Yoong (3-0) recorded undefeated marks for the Irish.

For the season Hsieh leads the women with a 33-3 record, followed by Atara Greenbaum (29-8), Miriam Grady (29-12) and Daria Kudriavtseva (28-11). Senior Stefani Deschner still has a perfect record this season at 17-0.

On the men’s side, Ariel Simmons (16-7) and Stephen Ewart (16-8) lead the team with 16 wins through two meets. Nick Itkin has also had a strong year in his return to the team with a 10-1 record.

Up Next

The Notre Dame Invitational closes out the regular season for the Irish as they begin to prepare for the 2021 NCAA Championships. The Irish will head to University Park, Pa. in search of their 11th National Championship. The Championships will begin on Thursday March 25 and go throughout the weekend until March 28.
