NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams will welcome over 30 schools to the Meyo Invitational at the Loftus Sport Center this Friday and Saturday.

2014 marks the 27th time that Notre Dame has hosted the Meyo Invitational, highlighted by the famous Meyo Mile. The event, the meet and the track are all named for Ray Meyo, a 1964 graduate who donated the money to build the track.

“It was the first meet we had on the track 27 years ago, and that in itself makes it special,” says head coach Joe Piane. “We’ve always highlighted that one-mile run, and there’s been any number of kids that have broken four minutes on it. It’s a very good meet for both genders.”

Day one of the meet gets started at 4 p.m. tomorrow with several field events. The Meyo Mile will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the men with the women following directly afterward. Notre Dame’s own Jeremy Rae has gotten under that four-minute mark twice at the Meyo–in 2011 he went 3:59.62 and a year later he improved his time to 3:59.31.

“It gets pretty hectic in there,” Piane says. “We have an announcer who will whip people into a frenzy, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Last weekend, the Irish had a combined 20 top-five finishes at the New Mexico Invitational, with the men coming in third overall and the women placing fourth.

At the Meyo, Piane and his coaching staff hope to have more kids qualify for the national championships, but this meet will also serve as an experience to get ready for the ACC Championships, which are just three weeks away.

“I’d like to see some more kids get qualified for the NCAAs,” he explains. “I’d also like to have another individual or two get under four minutes in the mile. But we really need to improve in the field event areas if we’re going to be a team to be reckoned with at the ACCs.”
