Notre Dame Second Varsity Eight Boat Grabs Fifth In Women's Collegiate JV Grand Final At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Notre Dame rowing team completed competition at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on Sunday afternoon. The second varsity eight boat, competing in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy Grand Final earned a fifth-place finish in the race, while the Irish varsity eight boat took third in the Petite Final of the Varsity Invitational.

The Notre Dame second varsity eight boat, comprised of coxswain Kelsey Otero (Mequon, Wis.), Megan Keegan (Marietta, Ohio), Mallory Glass (Fernandina Beach, Fla.), Carol Ann Michel (Princeton, N.J.), Erin McConnell (Simsbury, Conn.), Genevive Malone (Dayton, Ohio), Morgan Kelley (Windermere, Fla.), Elli Greybar (Western Springs, Ill.) and Erica Copeland (Marietta, Ga.) finished with a time of 7:09.47. Washington won the race in 7:00.00, followed by Michigan (7:02.08), Wisconsin (7:04.71) and USC (7:04.73). Oregon State rounded out the six-boat field with a time of 7:11.92.

In varsity eight competition, the Notre Dame crew of coxswain Stephanie Szegedi (South Lyon, Mich.), Anni Nowhitney (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Casey Robinson (Alexandria, Va.), Katherine Linnemanstons (Mequon, Wis.), Brittney Kelly (Wexford, Pa.), Christine Trezza (Staten Island, N.Y.), Emily Crosby (Middletown, N.J.), Christina Buckley (Huntington, N.Y.) and Lauren Buck (Flint, Mich.) finished with a time of 7:02.39 in its Petite Final race. UCLA took top honors in the race after posting a time of 6:52.20, just out-distancing Iowa (6:53.77). Miami was fourth in 7:07.43, followed by UC-Davis (7:12.60) in the five-boat.

“I was really pleased with how our second varsity eight rowed this weekend,” head coach Martin Stone said. “This boat has shown improvement each week, and this weekend’s results, certainly showed the progress that has been made. “We’re looking forward to racing next weekend against three more of the nation’s top teams. The competition we will face in our next competition will continue to make us a better team.”

Notre Dame will next compete in a four-team regatta as the Irish will square off against Ohio State, Minnesota and Brown in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, April. 11. Currently all three of those teams — Brown (ninth), Ohio State (16th) and Minnesota (17th), are ranked in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)/USRowing Top 20 poll.
