Notre Dame's JoAnna Deeter Finishes Fourth in 5,000 Meters

June 5, 1999

BOISE, Idaho) – Notre Dame distance runner JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) completed a phenomenal year by placing fourth in the women’s 5,000-meter race Saturday at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. With the finish, Deeter achieved All-America status for the second time in as many days, having placed third in the 10,000 meters on Thursday.

Deeter, who also garnered both indoor track and cross country All-America honors earlier this year, completed the 5,000 meters in 16:18.56, just nine seconds behind the race’s winner Carrie Tollefson of Villanova (16:09.51). Tollefson beat Deeter earlier this season at the BIG EAST Championships, where the pair finished in first and second place. Behind Tollefson in second place was the 10,000-meter winner Leigh Daniel of Texas Tech (16:12.72) and Michigan All-American Katie McGregor (16:15.75), who placed third.

Deeter becomes Notre Dame’s second two-time outdoor track All-American, joining teammate Alison Klemmer (Troy, Mich.), who garnered her second All-America nod with a seventh place in the 10,000 meters on Thursday.

For the four-day competition, the Irish women finished in a three-way tie for 17th place (13 points) with Florida and Louisiana Tech, Notre Dame’s best-ever women’s team showing. The men, with Ryan Shay’s (Central Lake, Mich.) seventh place in the 10,000 meters, tallied two team points and ended in a tie for 65th. Texas won the women’s team competition with 62 points, edging out second-place UCLA by just two points, while Arkansas won the men’s competition with 59 points.
