Notre Dame Registers Several NCAA B-Cuts at First Day of Ohio State Invitational

Columbus, Ohio. – The Notre Dame swimming and diving team put together a strong start in first-day action of the 2017 Ohio State Winter Invitational. A number of Irish student-athletes clocked their best times of the 2016-17 season.

STANDOUT SWIMS

Men’s 100-yard Breaststroke
Ben Gorski won the event with a time of 53.59. The first-place finish was his best time of the year and earned him a NCAA B-Cut. Earlier in the day in the preliminaries Steven Shek and Rex Riley swam their best times this season and earned NCAA B-Cut times with Shek timing in at 55.03, and Riley coming in at 55.32. Going into the meet Notre Dame had only earned one B-Cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Men’s 400-yard IM
Aidan Sweeney’s time of 3:52.66 earned him a NCAA B- Cut time in the event.

Men’s 100-yard Butterfly
David Stewart earned a second-place finish in the men’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.89. Stewart not only registered a season-best time but his swim also earned an NCAA B-Cut.

Men’s 100-yard Freestyle
Dan Fujan’s time of 44.21 was good for second place, his best time of the season and also earned him an NCAA B-Cut. Teammate Billy Barth had a season-best swim of 44.32 and nearly earned an NCAA B-Cut.

Women’s 400-yard IM
Paige Kaplan came in second in the event with her best time this season clocking in at 4:22.83.

On tonight’s performance…

“We had excellent prelims and finals today with many lifetime best performances and NCAA B-Cut qualifying times. We’ll return tomorrow ready to continue building on our great performances.”

On what stood out to him …
“We had standout performances by Molly Barry, Carolyn Kammeyer, Ben Gorski, Dave Stewart, Dan Fujan and Billy Barth.

OHIO STATE WINTER INVITATIONAL MEET NOTES

  • Molly Barry came in third out of 11 in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.98. Teammate Ellie Berdusco wasn’t too far behind with a time of 4:54.89. It was both Barry and Berdusco’s best times in the event this season.
  • Claire DeSelm came in third in the women’s 100-yard butterfly clocking a time of 56.17. It was DeSelm’s best time this season in the competition.
