Notre Dame Qualifies Five Student-Athletes for the NCAA National Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. –The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams advanced five student-athletes to the 2013 NCAA National Championships after completion of the second day at the NCAA East Preliminary meet. Sixteen Fighting Irish are set to compete Saturday inside Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Jade Barber lowered her school record Friday evening in the 100mH, stopping the clock at 13.04. Barber captured the school record at the BIG EAST Championship (May 5) with a time of 13.08. Barber’s time at the BIG EAST Championship overtook Dominque Calloway’s long standing school record of 13.13, set back in 1997.

Alexa Aragon bettered her school record in the 3,000m steeplechase, stopping the clock at 10:04.77. Aragon held the top mark in the event after crossing the line at 10:10.18 in March at the Stanford Invitational. Aragon’s time at Stanford beat out previous record holder Lindsey Ferguson’s 2009 time of 10:15.23.

Notre Dame will continue its push towards the NCAA Championship as the third and final day will get under way tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. The women’s 4x100m will kick off the action on the track at 6:00 p.m. while the men’s 4x400m will wrap up the contest at 9:45 p.m.

For those qualifying athletes, the 2013 NCAA D-I Outdoor Track & Field National Championship will take place on June 5-8 at the University of Oregon (Eugene, Ore.).

Hammer: Vivien Devaney placed 5th in her flight and 28th overall with a hurl of 54.24m.

100mH: Jade Barber took the third spot in the field of 48, registering a time of 13.04. Nevada Sorenson finished seventh crossing the line at 13.18.

400m: Michelle Brown (6th-52.55) and>Margaret Bamgbose (12th-53.00) each punched their tickets to the NCAA National Championship.

400mH: Megan Yanik finished fifth in her heat and 10th overall, recording a time of 58.66.

3,000m Steeplechase: Alexa Aragon placed second in her heat and fifth overall with a time of 10:04.77.

Men:

400m: Patrick Feeney (14th-46.93) placed third in his heat and 14th overall, earning his bid into the NCAA National Championship.
