Notre Dame Qualifies 12 Athletes For Outdoor NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After qualifying six athletes for the NCAA Championships on day two of the NCAA East Preliminary Round Friday, the University of Notre Dame track and field teams competed to add another six to that list on yesterday’s day three. A total of 12 Notre Dame student-athletes will be competing at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in less than two weeks.

The women’s 4x400m relay team of junior Amber Lalla, senior Michelle Brown, senior Megan Yanik and sophomore Margaret Bamgbose placed second with a time of 3:32.83. Brown and Bamgbose had already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women’s 400m dash, but the relay finish qualified them for a second time as well as Lalla and Yanik.

Junior Emily Morris will be representing Notre Dame on the field side of things in Eugene as well. She placed seventh in the women’s shot put with a throw of 16.53m, a personal best for the junior.

On the men’s side, graduate student Nick Happe qualified for Eugene with a 14:15.04 time in the men’s 5,000m run. Happe was the ACC Champion in that event last month.

The men’s 4x400m relay team of junior Chris Giesting, senior Jarrod Buchanon, freshman Harvey Smith and senior Patrick Feeney was the last to qualify for the NCAA Championships, coming in 12th place with a time of 3:06.78.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will kick off in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday, June 11.
