Notre Dame Named Golfweek Women's Team Of The Week

Sept. 25, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Back-to-back victories to open the season have landed the Notre Dame women’s golf team as the Golfweek national women’s team of the week as announced on Sept. 24. The Fighting Irish have swept both team and individual titles during the first two events of the 2007-08 campaign.

The Fighting Irish began the season ranked 62nd in the Golfweek poll and shot to a program-best national ranking of 12th following a victory at the Cougar Classic (Sept. 9-11). Junior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) captured medalist honors with a school-record 54-hole total of 210 (-6) to lead the Irish to a six-over par 870 at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C. Among the field of 20 teams were four top-25 squads, including Tennessee (14) and Texas A&M (19).

Maunu also established the program’s single-round record with a six-under par 66 during the first round of play. She was tabbed as the Golf World women’s college player of the week for her efforts.

Notre Dame continued its hot play at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup (Sept. 17-18) in Simpsonville, Ky. The Irish carded a 14-over par 878 to top the 17-team field at the Cardinal Club. Freshman So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep (FL)), who earned runner-up honors at the Cougar Classic, took home the individual crown at her second collegiate event with a three-under par 213.

Head coach Susan Holt, who is in her second season at Notre Dame, has the Irish playing consistent golf as no one from the team finished lower than 21st at the Cardinal Cup. Notre Dame boasts a young squad with Maunu being the only upperclassman to tee it up during the first two tournaments. Sophomores Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep (SC)) along with freshman Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) have comprised the remainder of the Irish travel roster so far this season.
