Blacksburg, VA — Sophomore Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.) had a goal and an assist in leading the Notre Dame men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Virginia Tech on the road in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The win was Notre Dame’s third straight and second consecutive shutout as the Irish improve to 6-4 and 4-2 in the BIG EAST.

Notre Dame’s three straight wins in the last nine days over Georgetown, West Virginia and Virginia Tech marks the first time since 1999 that the Irish have won three straight. In addition, its just the second time since beginning competition in the BIG EAST that an Irish team has won three consecutive conference games.

Prescod got the Irish on the scoreboard with a goal at the 34:59 mark off an assist from Filippo Chillemi (Roswell, Ga.). It was the third goal in two games for Prescod who now has three goals and three assists on the season.

Virginia Tech outshot the Irish 7-3 in the second half, but could not find the goal. Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) tallied his eighth goal of the season with just two seconds remaining in the contest off an assist from Prescod. Braun leads the Irish in scoring with eight goals and three assists and continues his streak of having scored in every contest (seven games) that Notre Dame has scored a goal. He leads the team in scoring with 19 points overall.

Freshman Chris Sawyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) recorded his second consecutive shutout as he made four stops on 11 Hokie shots. Sawyer has started Notre Dame’s last five games and is 4-1 in that stretch.

With the loss, Virginia Tech drops to 7-5 overall in 1-4 in the BIG EAST. The 2001 campaign is the Hokies’ inaugural season of playing soccer in the league.

The Irish will complete a current three-game road stretch on Wed., Oct. 17 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face sixth-ranked Indiana at 7:00 p.m. and then return home to Alumni Field for a BIG EAST match with Boston College on Sat., Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
