Oct. 18, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team is set to compete in the 2006 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday, Oct. 19 through Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the University of Minnesota. The draw features 18 of the nation’s top 125 singles players and 11 of the country’s top 60 doubles teams.

No. 20 junior Sheeva Parbhu and No. 21 senior Stephen Bass are the highest ranked Irish singles players in the field. Parbhu and Bass each reached the final of last season’s event. Bass came away with the championship following a 7-5, 6-2 straight-set victory.

Bass joined an elite club of just four Notre Dame players who have won that singles title. The others are David DiLucia (1990), Will Forsyth (1992) and Andy Zurcher (1993). Bass and Parbhu were the first Irish players to reach the final since current assistant coach Ryan Sachire in 1996.

The rest of the Notre Dame squad will compete include senior Ryan Keckley, senior Barry King, senior Irackli Akhvlediani, junior Andrew Roth, sophomore Brett Helgeson and sophomore Santiago Montoya.

The finalists and doubles champion will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, Nov. 2-5, at The Ohio State University.
