Notre Dame Men's Basketball Banquet Held Wednesday

April 4, 2001

NOTRE DAME, Ind. –

Junior Troy Murphy (Morristown, N.J.) is the recipient of the Notre Dame National Monogram Club MVP Award and senior Martin Ingelsby (Berwyn, Pa.) is the winner of the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley Rockne-Student Award. The awards were presented at the annual Notre Dame Men’s Basketball Banquet honoring the 2000-01 Irish basketball team.

Murphy, who averaged a team-leading 21.8 points and 9.2 rebounds, claims his third MVP award in as many seasons. The 6-11 forward earned his second consecutive BIG EAST Player of the Year award when he shared the honor with Boston College’s Troy Bell this season. He became just the fourth player in league history to win the award twice. Only Chris Mullin (St. John’s), Patrick Ewing (Georgetown) and Richard Hamilton (Connecticut) have been two-time player-of-the-year honorees.

Murphy scored in double figures in 29 of 30 contests this season and registered 13 double-doubles. He became the fifth 2,000-point scorer in Notre Dame history (2,011 career points) and currently ranks fifth all-time in scoring at the school. He also is the only player at Notre Dame with more than 2,000 career points and 900 rebounds (924).

Ingelsby, a marketing major, was one of three Irish players to earn Dean’s List recognition following the 2000 fall semester as he posted a 3.405 grade point average. Named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team last year, he has a 3.473 grade index in his last three semesters and an overall 3.69 average in his marketing curriculum.

Inglesby started all 30 games for the Irish this season and averaged 8.2 points and 6.4 assists. He ranked among the top 10 nationally in assists and his 3.16 assist-to-turnover ratio was best in the BIG EAST.

The Irish co-captain finishes his career third on the all-time career assist list with 526 and ranks second in games played (123).

In addition to the two awards, senior plaques were presented to Ingelsby and fellow teammate Hans Rasmussen (Portland, Ore.).
