NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Playing in its first regular-season home tournament since 2004, the Notre Dame men’s golf team finds itself in second place through two rounds at the inaugural Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, which began Monday at the Warren Golf Course (par 70/7,011 yards) on the northern edge of the Notre Dame campus. The Irish used their keen knowledge of their home course, which is rated one of the nation’s top 15 college layouts by Golf Digest, to card a 26-over par 586 (292-294) that puts the hosts 19 shots behind tournament leader and 24th-ranked Lamar, with Florida State (591) in third place and Baylor and Augusta State (600) sharing fourth place through 36 holes at the 12-team event.

Senior All-America candidate Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) was Notre Dame’s top finisher on Monday, settling into fourth place among the 67-man field with a one-over par 141 (68-73). Isban is three strokes behind overnight leaders Oliver Bekker and Justin Harding of Lamar, who each fired a two-under par 138 — Bekker also was the only competitor to break par in both of his rounds on Monday. Irish sophomore Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) also is in the top 10 of this week’s tournament, currently standing tied for eighth place at six-over par 146 (73-73).

In addition, Notre Dame has entered five players in the event who are competing as individual entrants and whose scores are not counted to the Irish team total. Leading the way among these unattached competitors for Notre Dame is freshman Carl Santos-Ocampo (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples), who is tied for 11th place at eight-over par 148 (72-76).

The Irish will return to the Warren Golf Course on Tuesday beginning at 9:09 a.m. (ET) for the final round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, with Notre Dame’s starting five scheduled to go off from the first tee. Live in-progress scoring for the tournament is available through the Golfstat web site (www.golfstat.com), and final results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action. Fans also can obtain updates on the Irish at the Gopher Invitational through the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) and the Irish ALERT text message system (visit www.und.com for more details and registration information).
