Notre Dame Hockey Announces 2009-10 Schedule

June 18, 2009

Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson today announced the 2009-10 Notre Dame hockey schedule. The 36-game schedule opens on the weekend of Fri.-Sat., Oct. 9-10 with a two-game home series versus the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers. The October schedule includes seven of eight games at home with the lone road game at defending national champion – Boston University.

The schedule features teams from five conferences – Alabama-Huntsville and Niagara (CHA), Providence, Boston College and Boston University (Hockey East), Colgate (ECAC) and North Dakota (WCHA) along with 28 CCHA regular-season games.

In making the schedule announcement, Jackson said, “The four games with Hockey East opponents and being in the Michigan/Michigan State cluster (four games each) will create an exciting element to this year’s schedule for our team and fans. We are also excited to bring Irish hockey back to Ft. Wayne and Chicago to help expose college hockey to those two great hockey cities.”

Included in the 2009-10 schedule is the second annual Shillelagh Tournament that will be held at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Jan. 2 and 3. This year’s field includes perennial college hockey power, North Dakota, along with Colgate and Niagara. The Irish will face Colgate in a 6:05 p.m. (CT) game on Jan. 2 with North Dakota and Niagara playing in the opening game at 3:05 p.m. Game times on Jan. 3 are 2:05 and 5:05 p.m. (CT) with Notre Dame playing in the 5:05 p.m. game.

Notre Dame will play 18 home games at the Joyce Center and will be the home team on Sunday, Nov. 22 versus Michigan State when the two teams close out a home-and-home weekend series at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Ft. Wayne, Ind. That game has a 4:05 p.m. starting time. This will mark the third time that the Irish have played a home game in Ft. Wayne since the 2004-05 season. Notre Dame will serve as the host school this spring when the Coliseum plays host to the NCAA Midwest Regional, March 27-28.

The Irish have a busy home schedule in October, playing seven of eight games on home ice. After opening with Alabama-Huntsville, Notre Dame will host Providence College the following weekend, Thur.-Fri., Oct. 15-16 (weekend of the USC football game). On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Irish travel to Boston, Mass. to face the Boston University for the lone road game of the month. They return home to face Boston College on Fri., Oct. 23 with the Boston College-Notre Dame football game scheduled the following day. The Irish then close out the month with the CCHA opening series at the Joyce Center against Ohio State.

The remaining home games come versus CCHA opponents with Northern Michigan, Bowling Green, Ferris State and Nebraska-Omaha, playing two-game series at the Joyce Center. Notre Dame travels to Alaska, Miami, Lake Superior State, Western Michigan and Bowling Green for two game series while the Irish will face Michigan and Michigan State in home-and-home series twice during the season.

Notre Dame will play one Tuesday night game (Oct. 20 at Boston University), two games on Thursday nights (Providence, Oct. 15 and at Michigan on Feb. 25) and five Sunday games (Nov. 15 at home versus Northern Michigan, Nov. 22 vs. Michigan State at Ft. Wayne, Dec. 13 at home versus Michigan, Jan. 3 in the Shillelagh Tournament and Jan. 10 at home versus Ferris State). The Sunday home games will start at 4:05 p.m. Weeknight games (Thur.-Fri.) for Notre Dame will start at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday games have a 7:05 p.m. starting time except for the Oct. 31 game with Ohio State that has a 5:05 p.m. opening faceoff. All times are subject to change when television announces its schedule.
