Graduate student Gerek Meinhardt made history earlier this week when he captured the No. 1 ranking at the Paris Foil World Cpup. Meinhardt is the first American and Notre Dame fencer to be No. 1 in the men's foil weapon class.

Notre Dame Headed For Big Apple

Jan. 24, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Thursday afternoon, the University of Notre Dame fencing team set out for the airport, headed east once more. This time, the destination was New York City, as the Irish have two meets scheduled this weekend.

The first, the NYU Invite, takes place Saturday, January 25th at the Coles Sports Center on the campus of NYU. 2012 Olympian and current No. 1 men’s foilist Gerek Meinhardt did make the trip with the team, and will be competing at both meets.

The second meet will happen on Sunday, January 26th, on St. John’s campus within the Carnesecca Arena in Queens.

This is not the first time competing in either meet for the Irish, as last year both the men’s and women’s teams dominated the competition in the Big Apple. The women were undefeated at last year’s St. John’s Invitational, earning a perfect 5-0 record. The following day at NYU, the women suffered their only loss of the season at the hands of Columbia-Barnard. The men posted matching 3-2 marks at both meets.

Full results and event recaps will be available on und.com/fencing. For live results, follow the Notre Dame fencers on Twitter @NotreDameFencing.
