Notre Dame Football Pre-Game Masses Move to Various Locations in 2017

Sept. 1, 2017

Friday pre-game Masses for the University of Notre Dame football squad will be held at a variety of campus locations in 2017.

Irish head coach Brian Kelly selected a combination of residence halls and additional special/unique locations on campus to emphasize the Notre Dame community to his team. Masses over the years had been held at a number of sites, including the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Here are the 2017 locations:

Temple (Sept. 1)–Alumni Hall
Alumni Hall was named to honor the University’s loyal graduates. It is the only residence hall not named after a person or family. The exterior features an impressive array of gargoyles and stone carvings. Alumni Hall houses carvings specific to football in legendary coach Knute Rockne and the Irish terrier mascots of the 1920s to 1960s.

Georgia (Sept. 8)–Dunne Hall
Established in 2016 Dunne Hall is one of the newest residence halls. It is named after Notre Dame benefactors and friends of the football program Jimmy and Susan Dunne. It is home to the only Notre Dame chapel named in honor of Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Miami (Sept. 29)-Moreau Seminary
Mass will be held in the chapel at the seminary. This marked the location of team Masses for many years including the Ara Parseghian era into the Lou Holtz years.

USC (Oct. 20)–Farley Hall
Farley Hall is named after a former standout Notre Dame student-athlete and former rector of Walsh Hall and Sorin Hall, Rev. John “Pop” Farley, C.S.C. Farley’s first rector was former Notre Dame President Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C. Farley Hall was also home to former Notre Dame President Rev. Edward A. “Monk” Malloy, C.S.C.

North Carolina State (Oct. 27)-Lewis Hall
Funded by Julia Lewis in honor of her husband, Frank, this marked the first female residence hall on campus. Before the University began accepting undergraduate female students in 1972, Lewis Hall housed nuns seeking graduate degrees. Starting in 1968, Lewis Hall began housing laywomen seeking graduate degrees.

Wake Forest (Nov. 3)–Breen-Phillips Hall
Breen-Phillips Hall was named after a pair of benefactors, alumni brother-in-laws William Breen and Frank Phillips. The residence hall served as a home for naval officers and, at one time, the athletics department–including legendary head football coach Frank Leahy. Since arriving at Notre Dame, Kelly has supported one of the Breen-Phillips signature events which raises money for Meals on Wheels (auctioning off lunch with the Notre Dame football staff during spring practice).

Navy (Nov. 17)-Dillon Hall
Dillon Hall is the largest residence on campus. It was built in honor of Rev. Patrick Dillon, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s second president. The hall’s chapel is dedicated to Knute Rockne, who died just months before Dillon opened in 1931.
