Notre Dame Flies Through Final Day Of Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Notre Dame men’s swimming team wrapped up the three-day Hawkeye Invitational at the Iowa Aquatic Center on Sunday and finished third among the seven-team field. Notre Dame tallied 511 points, finishing behind only first-place Michigan (967) and host Iowa (723).

Notre Dame will now have a few weeks off before heading to Puerto Rico for its annual winter training session. While in Puerto Rico, the Irish look to defend its title at the island’s Copa Coqui collegiate meet.

1,650 Free: Going the distance in 16:00.15 was Kevin Hughes for a 13th-place finish … behind him was Patrick Murphy (16:04.31) in 14th.

200 Back: Bertie Nel (1:48.08) touched first for the Irish to record a sixth-place swim.

100 Free: Frank Dyer posted a preliminary time of 44.48 and touched sixth in the finals after going 44.56 … ninth-place went to Kevin Overholt after a 44.66 effort.

200 Breast: Zachary Stephens (2:02.30) was fifth in the finals after swimming a 2:01.47 in the morning session … Cameron Miller (2:03.46) was sixth overall and Christopher Johnson (2:03.77) took ninth.

200 Fly: Tylor Gauger (1:51.25) was sixth in the finals, as his time was a bit above the 1:50.97 he posted in the prelims.

400 Free Relay: With an NCAA B-cut showing in 2:59.31, Notre Dame placed third as Dyer, Overholt, John McGinley and Stephens teamed for 32 points in the final race of the invitational.

1-meter Diving: Competing at the Ohio State Invite, Nick Nemetz (281.35) posted a third-place finish as Michael Kreft (261.55) took fifth.

3-meter Diving: Nemetz (292.80) was fourth in front of a pair of other Irish divers as Kreft (287.30) was fifth and Ryan Koter (287.30) claimed sixth.
