East Lansing, Mich. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team closed out the final day of the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sunday afternoon with an 11-over par total of 299 and a third-place finish. The Irish shot a 54-hole total of 23-over par 887.

The tournament was played at the Forest Akers Golf Course (par 72, 6,236-yards) and was hosted by Michigan State University. The tournament featured three squads ranked in the top 50 by Golfweek, which included No. 22 Michigan State, No. 27 Purdue and No. 49 Notre Dame.

“I think there were a lot of positives to take away from the weekend,” head coach Susan Holt says. “We had three players shoot under par rounds. I think that shows the great depth of our team and I know everyone on our team is capable of doing that. We also have some things to work on. We missed some opportunities in our short game and we lost a lot there. Overall our goal was to shoot under a 300 stroke average and we accomplished that. We will see Purdue again in a couple of weeks and Michigan State later on in the season.”

Purdue won the Mary Fossum Invitational with an 11-over par 875. Michigan State finished five stokes ahead of the Irish to slide into second-place as the Spartans combined for an18-over par 882.

Texas State’s senior Krista Puisite was the overall champion of the two-day tournament with a one-under par 215 (71-71-73).

Freshman Lindsey Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was Notre Dame’s top-finisher as she tied for sixth-place with Purdue’s Laura Gonzalez. Weaver fired a four-over par 220 (75-70-75). Gonzalez tied for third at the 2012 NCAA Championship last spring.

Freshman Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas) shot the team’s best round on Sunday in the final 18 holes with a one-under par 71. Campbell improved by six strokes from round two to round three and developed the greatest improvement from round-to-round by any Irish player in the tournament.

Campbell (75-78-71) and sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, III.) both tied for 12th place firing an eight-over par 224. Armstrong shot 74-72-78 in the two-day event.

Sophomore Kelli Oride (Lihe, Hawaii) tied for ninth place with a six-over par 222 (77-70-75). Oride beat her previous 225 career best 54-hole effort from last year’s Hooiser’s Fall Invitational.

Junior Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) finished 34th with a 16-over par 232 (74-80-78).

The Irish will return to action at the Windy City Collegiate Classic on Sept. 1-2. That tournament will be played at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, III.
