NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team finished their annual DeCicco Duals tournament undefeated, as both the men’s and women’s teams went 9-0 across two days. The women’s team finished the season 29-2, while the men’s team logged a 23-6 record to close out their year.

“This weekend served as a continuation of the preparation process for us,” Irish head coach Gia Kvaratskhelia said. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids who don’t travel on the road with us to fence and for us as coaches to see their skills.”

With no byes scheduled on Sunday, the Irish fenced all five rounds straight through. Facing all club teams, the Irish beat Bradley (men, 25-2; women, 27-0), Indiana (men, 25-2; women, 27-0), Wisconsin (men, 25-2; women, 25-2), Michigan State (men, 22-5; women, 25-2) and Michigan (men, 22-5; women, 23-4).

The team made a brief presentation after the third round to Polly DeCicco, widow of former Notre Dame head coach Mike DeCicco, of whom the tournament is named for. DeCicco passed away in March 2013 from congestive heart failure. He was 85.

With the regular season concluded, the Irish head into the first annual Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Fencing Championships next, scheduled for Feb. 21-22nd. From there, they seek to qualify the maximum of 12 entrants to the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Midwest Regional Qualifier, slated for Saturday, Mar. 7th.
