Notre Dame Falls to NC State 5-1

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (26-18, 14-12 ACC) fell to NC State 5-1 in game two of the three game series at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday, May 5. The Irish will look to take the series in the final game on Saturday, May 6. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wolfpack homered in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead and after tacking on another run in the top of the third, NC State led 2-0 going into the bottom frame. 

Estevan Moreno led off for the Irish in the bottom of the third, singling through the left side to get the Irish offense started. Carter Putz put the Irish on the board with a groundout RBI to score Moreno and bring the Irish within one at 2-1 heading into the fourth.  

Both the Irish and the Wolfpack were held scoreless in the next four innings, until NC State recorded another two runs in the top of the eighth off of their second home run of the day. The Wolfpack extended their lead to 5-1 in the eighth and despite the Irish’s late efforts, NC State would go on to take game two. 

Vinny Martinez finished the day 2-for-4 with a base hit and a double. Estevan Moreno was 2-for-3 from the plate, recording Notre Dame’s only run of the day. Blake Hely started on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings, striking out six batters and allowing four runs on six hits. He was relieved by Justin Moore, who pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one run on two hits. Ryan Lynch and Sammy Cooper also saw action on the mound in the ninth inning.

The Irish return to Frank Eck Stadium to take on NC State in the final game of the series on Sunday, May 6 at 2:00pm for their final ACC game at home this season.
