Notre Dame Falls To #11 Louisville, 2-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Irish were on the wrong end of a 2-0 decision against No. 11 Louisville on Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.

Notre Dame controlled the majority of the match, holding a 15-5 advantage in shots and 8-2 advantage in corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish got off to a strong start and were on the front foot early. Notre Dame created three good scoring chances at the end of the first half, the first coming in the 39th minute. Sebastian Green slipped Daniel Russo in on goal, whose shot was pushed past the near post to keep it level.

Just one minute later Borso had a shot inside the box blocked and later in the sequence an effort from Russo was cleared just before the line to keep the match scoreless at the half.

Notre Dame continued to have the lion’s share of possession and create chances out of the halftime break. The Irish nearly scored the opener in the 50th minute, as Russo found Matthew Roou in the box, but his left-footed effort was saved.

Eight minutes later the Cardinals scored on a counter against the run of play to take a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

The Irish almost found the equalizer in the 63rd minute, as Sebastian Green’s first-time shot went just wide of the far post.

Louisville tacked on a second goal in the 81st minute to double its lead at 2-0. The Irish kept pushing forward in the attack for the remaining nine minutes but the Cardinals’ backline stood tall to secure the 2-0 win.

McFARLAND FAMILY MEN’S HEAD SOCCER COACH CHAD RILEY’S TAKE

On the performance…

“Credit to Louisville, they were very clinical in their finishing today and that’s where the game was decided. I didn’t think we were as clinical so we didn’t get the result. Overall there were a lot of positives in our play but again we just have to continue to improve our efficiency in the final third and convert quality chances into goals.”

UP NEXT

The Irish are back on the road for an ACC matchup against Duke at 6 p.m. ET on Oct. 14 in Durham, North Carolina. The game will air on ACCN.
