Notre Dame Falls 10-7 At Third-Ranked Duke

April 11, 2003

Durham, N.C. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team traveled south on Friday afternoon to face the third-ranked Duke Blue Devils. The Irish fell behind early in the game and could never recover as they dropped a 10-7 decision to the Blue Devils at the West Campus Turf Field.

Kate Kaiser scored three goals and Corinne Broesler and Meghan Miller each scored two to pace the Duke attack. Meredith Simon (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) led Notre Dame with two goals and an assist to extend her current scoring streak to five games (13g, 3a). Lauren Fischer (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Crysti Foote (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist each in the game.

The loss, Notre Dame’s fifth this season to a ranked team, drops the Irish record to 4-5 on the year. Duke improves its record to 11-2 for the campaign. The Irish are now 1-5 this year versus teams ranked in the Top 20.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the game on goals by Kaiser, Miller and Lauren Gallagher (free position).

Notre Dame got on the scoreboard 32 seconds after Gallagher’s goal when Fischer converted a pass from Simon at 22:28.

Duke built the lead to 5-1 on goals by Jessica Bennett and Kaiser’s second of the game at 13:35. Anne Riley (Sr., Marblehead, Mass.) cut the lead to 5-2, but Kristy Dirks (7:05) made it 6-2. Danielle Shearer (Sr., Hampstead, Md.) closed the first-half scoring with her only goal of the game with 1:15 left in the opening stanza.

By picking up just one point in the game, Shearer had her streak of games with two or more points stopped at 19 straight. She did extend her scoring streak to 30 games with the goal – a streak that started on April 25, 2001 – during her sophomore year.

Kaiser gave Duke a four-goal lead with her third of the game at 28:54 for a 7-3 lead. Abby Owen (Jr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Foote sparked an Irish rally as their goals 1:30 apart cut the lead to 7-5.

Broesler sandwiched her two goals around Simon’s first goal of the game to make it 9-6. Simon cut the lead to 9-7 with 6:40 left, but that was as close as the Irish would get as Miller scored her second of the game with 41 seconds left for the 10-7 final score.

Duke outshot the Irish in the game by a 27-14 margin. Jen White (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) made seven saves in the Irish goal while Megan Huether made five stops in the Blue Devil goal.

The Irish will have to bounce back from the Duke loss as they return home to host the 19th-ranked Stanford Cardinal at Moose Krause Stadium on Sunday, April 13. Game time is 12:00 noon (EST).
