NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With festivities aplenty held throughout the meet for retiring men’s (and former women’s) head coach Tim Welsh, the University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team did their part in honoring the 29-year Irish veteran with a convincing 162-124 victory over visiting Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at Rolfs Aquatic Center.

Welsh, who coached the Irish women from 1985-95, was honored throughout the meet with video tributes and was presented with a brand new bicycle near the end of the competition from the 2013-14 men’s team. Swimming alums from throughout Welsh’s time at Notre Dame helped honor a man that is respected throughout the swimming community for winning with class and dignity.

“Today was a terrific day as it was all about Tim Welsh and his influence on swimming and diving here at the University of Notre Dame,” said women’s head coach Brian Barnes. “What he has done for our sport is just tremendous and we are lucky to have had a true professional and a role model like him around for the last 29 years. This was Tim’s day and that was our (the women’s team) approach when we arrived at the pool today.”

The Irish (8-5) had no trouble with the visiting Vikings as they won the first 11 swimming events before exhibitioning both diving specialties as well as the 100 fly, 400 IM and 200 free relay.

Notre Dame will now train for a little over a week before heading to its very first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship meet in Greensboro, N.C., Feb. 19-22.

The Irish opened up the meet by taking the top three spots in the 200 medley relay. Catherine Mulquin, Emma Reaney, Katie Miller and Kelly Ryan finished first in 1:43.73.

Junior Erin Foley picked up the next Notre Dame win as she won the 1,000 free in 10:26.83.

Miller continued the quick start with a win in the 200 free in 1:54.04.

Ryan was up next as she claimed a 100 back victory in 57.12.

Notre Dame swept the 100 breast with senior Christen McDonough leading the charge in 1:04.87. Sophomores Genevieve Bradford (1:06.66) and Sydney Golic (1:07.34) followed, placing second and third, respectively.

Reaney notched her second individual win of the day as the Lawrence, Kan., native won the 100 free in 51.93.

Mulquin also won her second individual event of the afternoon with a convincing victory in the 200 back (2:06.80). Teammate Anna Grainger earned silver as she touched the pad in 2:08.13.

Senior Lauren Stauder closed out her home career in style with a victory in the 200 breast (2:17.75).

Joining Reaney and Mulquin with double victories on the day was Foley, who claimed the 500 free (5:05.75) to go along with her 1,000 free title.

The Irish exhibitioned several events, but would have also won the 3-meter dive (Emma Gaboury – 329.48), 100 fly (Katie Miller – 56.43), 1-meter dive (Allison Casareto – 300.67) and the 200 free relay (Sarah Dotzel, Ryan, McDonough, Stauder – 1:36.32).
