Notre Dame, Ind. –
The following are Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White’s comments following Matt Doherty’s decision Tuesday afternoon to accept the head men’s basketball coaching position at the University of North Carolina:
“First and foremost, we would like to thank Matt and Kelly Doherty for what they’ve contributed to the University of Notre Dame and, specifically, the men’s basketball program. I personally didn’t have the good fortune to be here during the past basketball season, but it’s safe to say their impact has been tremendous.
“It’s obvious we’re seriously disheartened by their departure, but we certainly wish them well at the University of North Carolina.
“At this juncture, our concern here at Notre Dame is focused on the student-athletes within the men’s basketball program. We have an outstanding team returning, and they’re a great group of young people.
“Our goal is to attract the very best coach we can find for the University of Notre Dame — and we will endeavor to do it in short order. Anticipating this eventuality, we have begun the process of talking to a wide array of college basketball contacts, and we are well-engaged in the process.”
