Here are Five (or more) Things To Know about the Notre Dame – Virginia game…

IRISH CLOSE REGULAR SEASON AT TOP-RANKED VIRGINIA

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (18-12, 8-9 ACC) head to Charlottesville, Virginia, to end the 2017-18 regular season at No. 1/1 Virginia (26-2, 15-1 ACC). The Cavaliers have sealed the top seed in the 2018 ACC Championship, while the Irish are in the running for the No. 9 or No. 10 seed depending on this weekend’s conference action.

QUICK FACTS

  • Mike Brey is one victory away from reaching 500 wins in his career. Already the all-time wins leader in men’s basketball at Notre Dame, Brey looks to become the 23rd active Division 1 coach to win 500 games. Brey’s 400th win at Notre Dame against Pittsburgh on February 28 was his 750th career game. Saturday’s game at Virginia will be his 600th game coached at Notre Dame and 90th ACC regular-season game.
  • T.J. Gibbs has scored in double figures in a career-best 18 consecutive games dating back Dec. 21, 2017.
  • Matt Farrell hit the game-winning three-point shot at Wake Forest with just 5.8 seconds remaining. Later that evening, Farrell’s grandfather, Robert (Notre Dame class of 1958), passed away but was able to see his grandson connect on the game-winning play. Farrell returned home with his family after the game with Pittsburgh and plans to rejoin the Irish for practice Friday evening at Virginia.
  • With Bonzie Colson back in the line up against Pittsburgh, Notre Dame recorded its best scoring run of the season in the first half, outscoring the Panthers 16-0 over a 5:02 minute stretch.

NOTRE DAME – VIRGINIA SERIES HISTORY

Notre Dame ended Virginia’s 10-game win streak in the series last year in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament, earning a 71-58 victory. Virginia leads the ACC series 5-1 and 2-0 at home.

The series began in 1981 when No. 11/11 Notre Dame knocked off top-ranked Virginia 57-56 on an Orlando Woolridge desperation jumper at the buzzer.

The Irish and Cavaliers have met in the ACC, NCAA and NIT tournaments (including the 1992 NIT Championship game).

WINNINGEST CLASS AT NOTRE DAME

The 2017-18 senior class of Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell, Martinas Geben, Matt Gregory and graduate student Austin Torres has set the mark as the all-time winningest senior class at Notre Dame.

The 2016-17 senior class of Steve Vasturia, V.J. Beachem and graduate student Patrick Mazza and the the 2012-13 group of Joey Brooks, Mike Broghammer, Jack Cooley and Scott Martin previously held the school record with 97 wins.

A SEASON OF MILESTONES CONTINUES FOR Mike Brey

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey has reached two milestones in his coaching career this season and is poised to reach another before the season ends.

Brey became the all-time men’s basketball coaching wins leader at Notre Dame (400 current – 394 was the record-breaking total) with an 88-58 victory over NC State on January 3, 2018.

Brey won his 400th game at Notre Dame against Pittsburgh on February 28, 2018, making him the 11th active coach to have 400 wins at his current school.

Brey is one win away from 500 in his coaching career and is looking to become the 23rd active Division 1 coach to reach 500 career wins.

Should Brey reach the 500-win barrier, he will join Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Roy Williams, Greg Kampe, Tony Shaver, Tom Izzo, Fran Dunphy, Bob McKillop, Jay Wright and Mark Few as the only current coaches to win 500 or more games while coaching at just one or two schools.

NOTRE DAME AT VIRGINIA – BY THE NUMBERS

Colson was averaging 21.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, over two steals and over two blocks per game – the only college player to hit those averages in 2017-18 and the only player to reach those averages since Sports Reference started tracking statistics in the 1992-93 season. Colson returned to the starting lineup vs. Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Feb. 28, scoring 12 points with nine rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes of action.

12

Notre Dame will be pursuing its 12th win over a number-one ranked team (10th over an AP No. 1) on Saturday against No. 1/1 Virginia. Mike Brey owns two victories over a top-ranked team – No. 1/1 Syracuse in 2012 and No. 2/1 North Carolina in 2016. See page page for a full list of Notre Dame’s win over No. 1.

17

Both T.J. Gibbs and Matt Farrell are on a streak of 17 consecutive games with at least one three-point field goal, which is tied for fifth in the ACC. Farrell’s career-best streak of 31 games ended earlier this season vs. St. Francis Brooklyn. Farrell has hit at least one three pointer in 47 of his last 48 games played.
