NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Sophomore Jeff Chen (Walnut, Calif./Los Altos) carded a solid second-round 72 and finds himself in a tie for 35th place at 10-over par 150 to lead all Notre Dame golfers at the third annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, which got underway Monday with the first two rounds of action at the Warren Golf Course (par 70/7,023 yards) on the Notre Dame campus.

The Irish will have some ground to make up heading into Tuesday’s final round, as they currently stand in 15th place at 48-over par 608 (307-301), 29 shots behind overnight leader Minnesota (579, +19) in the 16-team field. The Golden Gophers will sleep on a one-stroke lead over Arkansas and a four-shot edge on Michigan State and Virginia.

Junior Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) is one shot back of Chen in a 38th-place tie at 11-over par 151 (75-76). There is a three-way tie for the individual tournament lead through 36 holes, with Michigan State’s Randy Hutchison, Arkansas’ Andrew Landry and Virginia’s Kyle Stough all sharing top honors at one-over par 141 to pace the 83-man field.
