HANAHAN, S.C. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team is currently in 11th-place following the first two rounds of the Cougar Classic at the par 72, 6,092-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club. The Fighting Irish posted rounds of 301 and 300 for a 12-over par 601 total, which is 22 shots in back of co-leaders, North Carolina and LSU. Sophomore Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Collegiate Parkside Institute) paced the Irish on the day by firing a two-over par total of 146 (71-75) to reside in a tie for 14th-place. Her first round total of 71 tied a personal collegiate-best mark.
Florida State’s Whitney Brummett (70-70) and North Carolina’s Lauren Hunt (69-71) are currently tied for first after posting four-under par totals of 140. Marci Turner of Tennessee carded the low round of the day with a five-under par 67 during the afternoon’s second round.
Irish senior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) knocked four shots off of her first round total with an even-par 72 in the afternoon to possess a 148 (76-72) total, which places her in a tie for 24th at the season-opening event.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) shot a two-over par 74 in round one and then notched a 79 in the afternoon and is tied for 46th with a nine-over par 153. Brophy’s classmate Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep School) began with an 83, yet came back strong in the second round with a three-over par 75. Her 158 total has her in a tie for 71st overall out of the 95-golfer field. Matching Wetzel with a 158 was her senior teammate Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), who carded rounds of 80 and 78.
