No. 9 Notre Dame Wraps Up ITA Competitions

SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 9 Notre Dame men’s tennis squad wrapped up competition at the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, Wash., with a 5-0 loss to No. 12 North Carolina in the final round of the consolation bracket. Notre Dame now holds an 8-3 dual-match record this season.

Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu earned a doubles win for the Irish, taking the pair of David Stone and Lenny Gullan , 8-5. Unfortunately it would not be enough for Notre Dame as the Tar Heels earned the other two doubles wins to go up 1-0 in the team competition.

North Carolina would go on to sweep the Irish in the singles events, taking four singles matches to earn the 5-0 victory. The final two singles matches were not completed due to timing. David Anderson fell to Taylor Fogleman, 6-2, 6-1, which was followed up by Stephen Havens’ loss to Chris Kearney, 6-1, 6-4.

The win by North Carolina’s Clay Donato clinched the win for the Tar Heels as he defeated Andrew Roth, 6-5, 6-3. Finishing up at the same time was the match between Parbhu and Stefan Hardy which went to Hardy, 6-4, 6-2, to finish up the 5-0 match.

The Irish are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion against Purdue. Match time is set for noon (ET).
