Feb. 23, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Coming off two straight wins, including an upset of top-ranked Northwestern, the No. 7 Irish women’s tennis team looks to continue its success as it welcomes No. 17 Ohio State to the Eck Tennis Pavilion Wednesday afternoon.

Match time is set for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday’s contest is the third in a six-match homestand for the Irish.

Notre Dame is coming off one of the biggest wins in program history as it knocked off No. 1 Northwestern, 5-2, Sunday. It was the first time the Irish had ever beaten the country’s top-ranked team and the first time since 2007 they had taken down the Wildcats. Notre Dame also topped Illinois, 5-2, last weekend and moved to 7-1 on the season.

Sophomore Kristy Frilling leads the Irish with perfect records in both singles and doubles. Frilling is 8-0 at No. 1 singles, including her most recent wins over No. 85 Rachael White of Illinois and Northwestern’s 12th-ranked Maria Mosolova. In all, Frilling has topped five nationally-ranked singles opponents this season. On the doubles side, Frilling is 8-0 with senior teammate Kali Krisik at No. 1 doubles with three wins over ranked teams, including the Wildcats’ 14th-ranked duo of Lauren Lui and Elena Chernyakova.

Krisik and freshman Chrissie McGaffigan are also going strong with 7-1 singles records this season. Sophomore Shannon Mathews is 5-3 at No. 2 doubles, including a key win over No. 29 Samantha Murray of Northwestern.

The Buckeyes come to the Eck as the nation’s 17th-ranked team with a 9-2 record. Ohio State had a four-match win streak halted Saturday as they fell to No. 10 Tennessee, 5-2. The Buckeyes are led by senior Kirsten Flower who holds an 8-3 record at No. 1 singles and is ranked 67th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Notre Dame has won the last 14 meetings with Ohio State, dating back to the 1991 campaign, and is 17-3 all-time against the Buckeyes. The Irish are 5-0 against teams from the Big Ten Conference this season.
