COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The sixth-ranked Irish women’s tennis team bounced back from Saturday’s tough loss to earn their seventh-straight victory over Texas A&M with a 4-3 win Monday at the George P.Mitchell Tennis Center. Notre Dame improved to 16-3, while the Aggies fell to 8-5.
The Irish got on the board early after sweeping the doubles matches. Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, Calif./Troy) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich./Cranbrook-Kingswood) topped Sheri Olivier and Christi Liles, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles, before Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa/Bettendorf) and Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas/Nolan Catholic) downed Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank, 8-6, at second doubles to clinch the point for the Irish. The third-ranked duo of Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio/Lehman & Abeka) and Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan./Arkansas City) extended their win streak to 15 straight matches and completed the sweep for Notre Dame with an 8-5 win over No. 71 Elze Potgieter and Nazari Urbina at first doubles.
Krisik won her 10th match of the season and put the Irish up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Davidson at No. 6. Olivier gave the Aggies their first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rafael at fifth singles.
No. 18 Frilling won her 15th match of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 70 Urbina at No. 1 singles. Ciobanu improved to 16-3 and clinched the win for the Irish with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Liles at fourth singles.
No. 58 Potgieter topped Mathews 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, while No. 116 Frank edged No. 113 McGaffigan, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0, at third singles to make it a 4-3 match.
The Irish return home for their first home match in over a month to take on South Florida Friday at 3:00 p.m.
