No. 6 Irish Advance to NCAA Second Round with 4-0 Win Over IPFW

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The sixth-ranked and fifth-seeded Notre Dame women’s tennis team cruised to the second round of the NCAA Championships with a 4-0 win over IPFW Friday afternoon at the Courtney Tennis Center. The Irish improved to 23-3, while the Mastodons ended their season with a 24-5 record.

Notre Dame will take on No. 47 Boise State in the second round at noon Saturday at the Courtney Tennis Center. The Broncos defeated No. 21 Iowa, 4-1, Friday morning.

The Irish cruised to the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) and Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas) improved to 9-0 at No. 3 doubles, topping Yuka Kobayashi and Raquel Vescovi, 8-2, before Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, Calif.) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) clinched the point for the Irish with an 8-1 win over Katie Brien and Alex Forsyth. The third-ranked duo of Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan.) were leading Ingrid Ballus and Amy Recht, 7-2, when the point was clinched.

Mathews put the Irish up 2-0 with her 14th win of the season, a 6-1, 6-0 besting of Ballus at No. 2 singles. McGaffigan defeated Vescovi, 6-1, 6-0, at third singles to give Notre Dame a 3-0 advantage. Ciobanu clinched the win for the Irish with her 23rd victory of the season, a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Brien at No. 4 singles.

No. 16 Frilling was leading Recht, 6-4, 4-3, at No. 1 singles when the match was clinched. Krisik was battling Forsyth, 6-2, 2-3, at fifth singles, and Rafael was up on Kobayashi, 6-2, 3-2, when the match was halted.

In earlier action, No. 47 Boise State advanced to the second round with a 4-1 win over No. 21 Iowa. The Broncos clinched the doubles point, then earned wins at second and third singles, before Iowa could get on the board with a victory at No. 1 . Boise State’s Elyse Edward clinched the win for the Broncos with a victory at No. 4 singles.
