March 4, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The third-ranked Irish women’s tennis team will host the Iowa Hawkeyes Friday at 3 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

Notre Dame is 11-1 for the season after wins over North Carolina and Wake Forest last weekend at home. The newest set of rankings released this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) found the Irish in the top three after a fifth-place spot last week.

Three Irish student-athletes found new rankings this week with senior Kelcy Tefft leading the way at 31. Freshman Kristy Frilling came in at 55 and sophomore Kristen Rafael is ranked 114. Tefft and Frilling jumped one spot to No. 2 in the doubles rankings, just ahead of Tefft and junior Kali Krisik at No. 3.

The Hawkeyes are 6-5 and are coming off a 4-3 upset of No. 52 Minnesota in their Big Ten opener. Iowa is led by freshman Sonja Molnar, the 75th-ranked singles player in the country.
